Byron Bay Weekend February 5-7

Last weekend (Feb 5-7) we went to Byron Bay and stayed in the backpackers hostel in Lennox Head. After our hour long bus ride, we arrived in Byron and went to the Buddah Bar/ Brewery and Arts Center for Pizza and movie. The movie theatre used to be a place where pigs were kept and they turned it into a theatre with couches on the ground and glow in the dark looking splattered paint, it was the most unusual movie theatre! After the movie, we watched the concert outside for a bit and took off to the hostel. In my room was Jessie, Annie, Steph, Amy and Cyrus!

We took a night walk to the beach and then the lake - the water has tea tree oils in it/ Melaleuca oils that are said to have healing properties. (picture-->night swim)
Byron Bay is such a cool place! It's kind of hippie like Vermont and has beautiful beaches!

Saturday we woke up at 4:45 am to watch the sunrise at the lighthouse, but it was pouring and we didn't see the sunrise. When it stopped raining, the view was pretty cool over the cliffs and you could see people kayaking, surfing, and paddle surfing in the waves

We had breakfast at Top Shop cafe and then hung out with the boys at the beach while everyone napped. Our surf lesson was at 11:30 and it was raining but so much fun! There were some jellyfish - large clear/pinkish ones and small blue bottles, but we didn't get stung. :-)  Finally it stopped raining and I got up on some waves. We took  a group photo at the end and then cleaned off in the lake!
We spent the rest of the day walking around and doing some shopping downtown at Byron Bay with Annie, Bonnie, and Jessie. Jessie and I split a veggie kebab!  It's hard to stay with the whole group when we do things because everyone wants to do different things, so we all split up into small groups and it's easier that way.
For dinner, Mazz and Cameron bought chicken and beef burgers  and sausages to grill outside at the hostel and we all helped prepare the salads! Dinner was o.k...I didn't feel that well after my burger though.
That night, a few of us walked down the road to a local bar and hung out and watched a band play for a couple hours. The next day, Sunday, was the day we were leaving and our Indigenous Kayak trip got postponed due to the weather to the next Saturday...

We left Saturday morning at 7:30 am to go ust 15 min. to Surfer's Paradise where we got our kayaks and paddles to South Stradbroke Island for some snorkling and Indigenous culture stuff! The 2 men in charge of the Kyaking trip set up Australian food and tea for us and the Indigenous man whose country/tribe it was told us stories and did an aboriginal dance. He put the paint on our heads, hands and feet to represent our minds, the places and people we touch and the places we go in our lives.
Then took us on a bush tucker hunt! We saw a wallaby and some other animal I forget the name. The beach where we kayaked to is one of the top places to surf.
